We promote the doodle art movement and we are the voice of creative reasoning for doodle artists. For them, doodling is an artistic choice and a currency in a life lived well—a way to promote freedom of creative expression. Doodling is not something you do. It is something you live.
Note to self: Have fun
One of the things I constantly nag myself to do is to have fun when I work. Whether this is a mural, a commissioned book, or a digital painting for myself, I am still surprised at the level of anxiety I get when I think of all the work I have to finish.
Let me tell you this: While having fun comes naturally to others whilst working on their art, my first instinct is to be done with the task at hand. This is where I have always been wrong. And because I’m so focused into finishing the work so I could move to another, the fun part I often neglect. So this time, I’m sharing an open letter to myself and to those who forget to relax and enjoy.
Before anything else, schedule the things you have to finish. You always get a sense of accomplishment whenever you see a detailed timeline of what will happen next. At the same time, I encourage you to welcome small surprises here and there. You are always anxious over things you cannot control, but you have to admit that there are times you secretly wish for a more unpredictable day. Now may not come straight from a superhero movie, but remember that you can always make the most out of it.
If you have an art to exhibit, look for inspirations when inspiration won’t come to you. When you have to produce fresh ideas, make time to find them. When you want to have a day for your personal work, always know that you have the weekend to enjoy it. Have fun. Don’t pressure yourself to over think. Remember to trust yourself. Great ideas have always come even a few seconds before deadline.
For those times you think having fun won’t fit in, squeeze it. When you’re in the middle of something, you get crossed-eyed and it’s not something nice to look at. You are glued to your seat and your friends cannot even get you off the computer anymore. When these things happen, take a deep breath. Play is part of the creative process. You are entitled to allow yourself some breaks. Go out, watch some movies while you work, listen to music. Stop thinking you are running out of time. You have always imagined working on your art to be fun. It is time to make that happen. Remember, you are where you want to be.
Lastly, when you have finally taken a break, it’s time to pick up that pen and start working again. There have been a lot of art works abandoned, and WIPs that have remained WIPs for years. Maybe it’s time to pick them up, dust them off, and finish them. Do not let a good idea remain a good idea. Always finish what you started. Remember that taking a break should not be synonymous with quitting.
To cap off this letter, I’m inviting our readers to relax a little. Enjoy a hot tea while you go through the pages. This issue we have cooked up a lot of interesting and fun articles on doodles and doodlers. It has also been a joy to talk to artists who agreed to share their art and share us what makes doing art fun. It’s high time to have a fun issue, and anything under the sun is absolutely welcome. — Elaine Catindig
