The Rise of Superheroes and Their Impact On Pop Culture

Join the Smithsonian, and comic book industry legend Stan Lee, to explore the history of the comic book and the rise of superheroes

On March 2018, The American Spaces of the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines launches a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Camp on The Rise of Superheroes and their Impact on Pop Culture offered by Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History through EDX. This course is designed for students to learn about the history and origins of the first superheroes and comic books, and how they changed over time; the evolution of American society from the Depression to today, as viewed through the lens of the comic book genre and how these historical examples impact the globalization and diversity of storytelling techniques for the present day.

In this course, students will be able to learn from the following experts including:

Mr. Stan Lee, who was one of the creators of the modern superhero template. His
early comics featuring Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor and the Avengers led to Marvel to success. He continues to reinvent himself to create modern global
superheroes and appear in cameos in superhero films and TV, such as Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Prof. Michale Uslan, executive producer of top grossing, award-winning movies, including the Dark Knight series, Lego Movie, the animated Batman films and Batman vs. Superman. Currently, He is a professor of Practice at the Indiana University Media School.
